Guides

Installing and using ink cartridges is second nature for many people. This guide is not aimed at those that have become accustomed to the installation and use of cartridges. This by no means a technical guide, nor is it meant to be so. Instead, it is designed for the use of beginners, and hence is very simple, with few technical terms.

This short checklist which will hopefully act as guide to improve the chances of everything working first time. Due to the large range of ink jet printers on the market today it would be almost impossible to cover every detail of the specific print software supplied with every printer. As a result this guide is very general, and only addresses the most common errors and points of note in most printers.

Step One: Remove the seal

Remove the seal which keeps the ink in a storable state, this is usually a small plastic lip to be snapped off, or a sticky tape seal which is to be removed. If this is not done correctly the ink cartridge will either supply insufficient ink to the print job or simply not work at all. Also be sure to properly close the ink cartridge caddy covers. This may seem an obvious stage, but it is easily forgotten, and is critical to successful installation.

Step Two: Align the Heads

The second stage requires the use of the printer's software utilities. These can usually be found in Control Panel... Printers. Though it is normally an automatic process performed by the printer, you are able to initiate the process manually from the print utilities menu, and may need to if the automated function is not performed successfully.

Step Three: Clean the Heads

Once the alignment is complete it is recommended that you clean the printheads. Again, this is usually an automatic process. However it may need to be done more than once, the option for this is also found within your print utilities menu. If this is not done the print may appear to be missing lines or even missing entire colours, in order to stop this waste of ink and time please check the test page printed by your computer is satisfactory.

Step Four: Final Check

Having run the utilities in Steps 2 and 3, your printer should be properly and ready for normal operation. It is now possible to go ahead with any pending print jobs, however it is recommended that you print something colourful on to a plain piece of paper, and also some plain black text, just to check that everything is in working order before possibly ruining an expensive piece of paper. If you complete these tests with no problems then you have successfully installed your new Ink Jet cartridge(s). However should there be any problems with either of these test pages simply repeat the above steps, in particular step 3 Finally, as a general rule, ink jet cartridges should be used within the recommended 24 months from the date of purchase, and 6 months from the time the cartridge is installed into the printer

Lets Help To Reduce Landfill

In the UK alone it is estimated that more than 30 million empty inkjet cartridges are thrown into landfill sites every year. Worldwide this figure increases to over 375 million.

Recycling inkjet cartridges decreases the amount of waste that is put into our landfills and ensures you can continue to buy cheaper alternative printer cartridges..

We want to help reduce landfills and recycle more products. You can help us by returning your empty inkjet cartridges. By recycling them we can help to protect the environment, safeguard our health and save energy. We do this in three ways:

  • By halting the massive drain on our natural resources - a new cartridge uses 2.8 Litres of oil to make!
  • By avoiding burning massive amounts of rubbish, which releases harmful toxins into the atmosphere.
  • By reducing the already overburdened landfill sites. These sites contain ever-increasing millions of cubic feet of non-biodegradable material, which can take over 1,000 years to biodegrade.

Start Collecting Empty Printer Cartridges Today!

Most people given the choice, would rather dispose of their empty cartridges in a way that would benefit the environment. If you know of any person or organisation that would benefit from our recycling printer cartridges program please tell them about our service.

Join Our Inkjet Cartridge Recycling Program Today

Our inkjet cartridge recycling program is beneficial to both you and the environment. The recycling program is free to join and we'll even pay for you to return them!

How Many Times Can You Recycle My Inkjet Cartridge?

On average, each inkjet cartridge, can be recycled 5-6 times. However some times a cartridge may not recycle even once whilst others may be recycled more than 6 times. What we do know with certainty is that all inkjet cartridges will wear out eventually and will need to be replaced.

Inkjet Cartridge Recycling

Please use our freepost envelope that will come with your order to return your empty inkjet cartridges or click here to download a freepost label to attach to an envelope or reuse an old envelope and we will recycle that too for you.

Toner Cartridge Recycling

We can now recycle empty toner cartridges too, and we will collect them (when you have enough) for free direct from your door through our partner GreenIBIS.  For details please click here and to arrange a collection please click here - Please note this is for the collection of toner cartridges only, inkjets should be returned to us as instructed above

Due to the volumes of data stored we have carefully considered the lawful basis under which we collect, store and process this data. We have completed a legitimate interest balancing assessment and determine that our interests in operating our business, providing a service to our customers, offering opportunities to the data subjects, and making a profit are a legitimate basis for processing when compared to the impact on the rights of the data subjects as defined in Article 6 1(f) and Article 47.

The nature of our service is a long-standing part of this industry and is generally accepted by the data subjects as beneficial to their careers. We have determined that the data subject will have a reasonable expectation that we will process their data.

We have completed a three-step assessment:

  1. Legitimate interest – considered as above
  2. Necessity test – this is a fundamental part of our business, without this processing we have no product or service to offer.
  3. Balancing test – we have considered the rights of the data subject, their expectations; impact on them and their families; and how we can protect their interests and rights under the GDPR and determine that processing is acceptable.

Before returning any item to us, you must contact us by e-mail or by telephone to notify us so that we can issue you with a returns authorisation number number. Please note that returns sent back without a valid and clearly marked returns authorisation number number may be refused or returned at your cost.

After contacting us by e-mail your enquiry will be processed and you will be allocated a returns authorisation number which must be clearly visible on the outside packaging. You may also give instructions on how and where to send your return.

We also offer a next day delivery service whereby you can select to have your order delivered by courier the following working day either at your home or work address.

For further details on our delivery options please click here including our next day delivery, same day dispatch and premium options.

Most of our orders arrive with the postman along with your other letters and we will try to pack your order in the smallest envelope possible so it fits through your letterbox.

Following extensive trials in 2011 the Royal Mail are rolling out a ‘Delivery to Neighbour’ scheme, wherein if the postman is unable to deliver something to you they’ll deliver next door instead.

They leave you a new card that says your neighbour has it and you can call round to collect when you arrive back home saving you the need to travel to the post office.

Alternatively you can have your order delivered to your work address, or a friend / neighbour.  To do this please enter your invoice address (where your credit card is registered) followed by a seperate delivery address and we will send your order here at no extra cost.

When you place an order with us and provide an email address online or over the phone we will send you an email to say your order is on its way.

Generally most of our orders go with Royal Mail so they should arrive with your normal postman.  Occasionally we may decide to send your order by an alternative method for example if its heavy or the postal system is currently not available.

Royal Mail advise us to allow 2-7 working days for delivery of postal orders.

If you do not receive your order 7 days after dispatch please, in the first instance, check with your local post sorting office that they are not holding a package for you, and if they are not please allow 10 working days for delivery before contacting us as we are not able to contact Royal Mail and claim for non delivery until this time. In most cases we find that the postman has forgotten to leave a card advising of an attempted delivery and that the parcel is waiting collection at the local sorting office.

Our customer service office is open 9am to 5:30pm Monday to Friday on 01823 250060 or email for a prompt response - please remember to include your order number and name and address.

Please note a lost in post claim form will need to be completed before a replacement can be sent in order for us to make a claim on your behalf from the Royal Mail.

If you require further assistance please contact us and a member of the team will be only to pleased to help.

OEM stands for "Original Equipment Manufacturer." OEM's such as Apple, Canon, Compaq, Epson, Hewlett Packard, and Lexmark are the companies that produce your inkjet printer as well as cartridges that are used in them. We offer both OEM name brand and non OEM name brand products. Because many of our products do not carry the OEM name, we can offer them to you at a lesser cost. Our non OEM name brand products such as Think , Re-Think and Think Alternatives utilize the same printer specific ink as the OEM name brands.

Professionally remanufactured cartridges such as Re-Think HP & Lexmark have been recycled to meet or exceed the Original Equipment Manufacturer specifications. The recycling and remanufacturing process involves inspecting, disassembling, cleaning, replacing worn out parts, reassembling, and refilling the toner or ink. Once the process is complete, the cartridge is then tested, sealed, and ready to be sold.

When an ink or toner states 5% page coverage, what does this actually mean?

To gain more of an understanding, it’s best to know what page yield means too. In this case it refers to a measurement tool. It is used to give you an estimate of how many pages you should be able to print before your cartridge runs out, for example ‘up to 2000 pages’. This however will differ depending on what printer you use and how you use it.

So, how can printer manufacturers state a print yield?

To do this they calculate the numbers based on page coverage. This is how much text and imagery there is on a print out, and is an industry standard measurement enforced by the Office of Fair Trading. In regards to 5% page coverage, this can differ depending on the size and type of font used. As an example, 5% could typically look like 13-15 whole lines of text in font size 11. It is also important to take into consideration both the space and amount of ink used. If an image took up the same amount of space as text, it would equate to more than 5% page coverage due to the sheer amount of ink used. Therefore when manufacturers state that page coverage is 5% and the print yield is up to 2000 pages, it means that it can print up to 2000 pages similar the one explained above. So if you’re expecting 2000 pages full of text you’d be mistaken.

Many cartridges contain a preset ink counter. Once this ink counter reaches its limit the cartridge will not report any ink levels.

Unfortunately this is not resettable, meaning the error is essentially unavoidable.

Your cartridge will still work without any problems. The only issue will be a lack of ink status monitor. Please keep an eye on your prints, and as soon as they start to fade then they would need replacing.
